This 81 VW Dasher diesel wagon is on my mind, I’m debating purchasing it tomorrow.. it’s a manual too! He says it cranks but wouldnt start; I’m gonna throw a battery on it and see what it does... Are these cars worth saving?

I believe these are 4 speed manuals. And why not? Save it.

First car I ever rode in. Timing pump may be off, since the belt looks fresh. If rust-free, definitely worth saving.
Edit: Since compression tests are harder to do quickly on a diesel, I’d suggest listening for uneven (or, rather, arrythmic) cranking. Not a great test, but a good early indicator of deeper problems.

It looks new in the pics but in person it’s a little worn... I didn’t get a chance to hook a battery to it yet but I will tomorrow

Only rust I see is a couple small spots by the door and on the seat rails, strangely

These were never made very well, but they're neat anyway. The engine is really hard to kill. Could be it's got air in the injection system, if they lose prime they won't start because they rely on suction from the injection pump alone to draw fuel from the tank.
That's gonna leave a mark!
